On October 16, 1957, Welfare Nurse Ella Louise Fortune was stationed at the Mescalero Indian Reservation, captured a glowing UFO on camera while it hovered above the North Test Range close to Holloman Air Force Base.

Her camera, a Kodak Pony 135, was loaded with colour film but she didn’t think to take a picture when she first saw the object. Traveling in her small station wagon, Nurse Fortune ascended the railroad overpass just north of Tularosa. Upon reaching the summit and beginning the descent, she was fixated upon the object. It was a radiant, flattened, egg-shaped entity against the backdrop of clear blue sky.

She continued to drive watching the object as much as she could. At about 6 miles north of Tularosa she decided to snap a picture so that she would have pictorial evidence of what she had seen. She stopped, made one exposure, then continued on her way to the Three Rivers Settlement where she checked and visited an patient.

According to Ella Fortune, the object did not reflect light, but rather emitted its own light. There was little to no wind that day, so the object couldn’t have been a balloon or parachute (two popular explanations). The object appeared to have density, and wasn’t fluffy or showed any characteristics of a cloud (another popular explanation).

When asked whether she felt the object night have been a lenticular cloud, she said that she was familiar with lenticular cloud structures, and was positive the object wasn’t a cloud of any kind.

UFOs have been known to have glowing auroras, and similar sightings have occurred all throughout history.
